Atria’s Mastery program, part of the Journeys framework, supports employees as they grow in skill, confidence and leadership. Through structured learning and self-guided development, it helps turn experience into career progress.
When Nicole M. talks about her career, she doesn’t frame it as a series of big leaps. Instead, she describes a steady progression – time spent as an Assistant General Manager, then as a Community Business Manager, each role building her confidence and preparing her for her current position as General Manager.
“There’s always something more to learn,” she says of her 10-year journey in senior living. “I’ve always been driven by curiosity. I want to understand how things work, how our communities come to life. That kind of learning never gets old.”
For Nicole, Atria’s Journeys framework has been a meaningful part of that progression, particularly her current stage for seasoned employees known as Mastery.
Mastery comes after Origins, Atria’s onboarding experience. While Origins builds a foundation, Mastery goes deeper to help motivated employees become more confident, capable and intentional in their roles.

For community leaders like Nicole, that means structured learning during their first year on the job. But as Heather Cunningham, Senior Director of Talent Development, is quick to point out, Mastery isn’t one-size-fits-all.
“Every role, every department, every location brings something different,” she explains. “What Mastery is really about is making sure there’s always a path forward and a way to grow for anyone who’s ready to spread their wings.”
In practice, that can look like strengthening technical skills, learning to navigate difficult conversations, or preparing for the next step in a career. For some employees, it’s a clearly defined path. For others, it’s more self-directed – drawing on tools like career ladders, stretch assignments and ongoing learning through Atria University, a robust training platform open to all employees.
“It’s really about whatever you need to show up better in your role,” Heather says. “We’re here to help you get there.”
For Nicole, one of the most valuable parts of Mastery wasn’t a specific module or lesson. It was something simpler.
Time.
Time to step back. Time to think. Time to focus on the bigger picture.
In a community setting, where no two days look the same, that kind of space can be hard to come by. There are always immediate needs, unexpected challenges and people to support. Mastery creates room to pause in the middle of that pace.
That kind of space is important because growth takes more than learning. It also takes time to put knowledge into practice.
Across Atria, Mastery takes many forms. A culinary team member building toward a sous chef role. A care employee picking up new skills to better connect with the people around them. A community leader gaining confidence in how they run a daily staff meeting.
The path looks different for everyone. But the belief behind it is the same: You don’t have to figure it out alone.
“Mastery is just one piece of Journeys, but it reflects something we believe deeply,” Heather says. “When people have the tools, support and space to grow, they gain confidence and build careers that truly matter to them.”
